Is Chiropractic Safe?
Chiropractic care is extremely safe. Research shows that spinal manipulation is at least 37,00 to 148,00 times safer than NSAIDs (over the counter anti-inflammatory) and 55,500 to 444,000 times safer than surgery for the treatment of lumbar disc herniation (JMPT 2004). A great safety record is the result of a conservative approach to health that avoids invasive procedures or addictive drugs.
The important thing to remember is that chiropractors are trained very extensively on when is an appropriate time to deliver a particular treatment, and to know when not to. For an untrained person, spinal manipulation when it is not indicated may be unsafe and cause harm to the recipient. Sometimes, following a thorough history and exam treatment may be modified because of safety concerns (for example an underlying bone weakening conditions), or referral for imaging or another medical professional to better manage the condition.
If you are concerned about risks or you are unsure about safety and efficacy of treatment please talk to us. We are more than happy to spend some time and clear up any concerns or misconceptions with you.
